Those of us who love our pens know that they can be more than just a writing instrument that we toss out and replace with a new one?they can be great tools that help us work and feel more creative. That said, most of us don't want to drop hundreds of dollars on a pen if we don't have to, so this week we asked you which budget pens were the ones you make sure never to let someone borrow and walk away with. Let's take a look at the top five, based on your nominations.
As with many Hives of this type, we're grouping together some popular models into brands, mostly because many of the brands here have so many varied models (and you voted for them all) that we think it's better to cover more territory than less. Still, you offered up way more great pen nominations than we can feature here, but we only have room for the top five.
Pilot Pens (G2, V5/V7, Varsity, G-Tech/Hi-Tec)
Pilot pens were some of the first to show many of us that a writing implement could be more than just a utilitarian device. Whether you were introduced to your first Pilot pen in school or at work, you probably still remember your favorite, and many of you called out your faves?specifically the Pilot G2?for its affordability, its broad availability, and it's smooth, clean writing. Many of you also pointed out how great the V5 and V7 models, which have been around for ages, still are, and others noted that when you wanted a fountain pen, you can't go wrong with the Varsity disposable model. Excellent taste. Photo by hades2k.
Zebra Pens (Sarasa, F/G-301, F-701, F-402)
Many of Zebra's most popular models are known for their trademark all-steel, metallic design, and you may remember the first time you encountered one?if it was like the first time I picked one up, they were unlike any other pen you'd seen in a world of disposable plastic pens. They just look sharp and elegant, and using them is just as much fun. Not all of their models are that trademarked steel body though: the Zebra Sansa, for example, is fantastic gel pen with a transparent body and soft grip for smooth, comfortable writing. Many of you also praised Zebra for its portability and attractive design?most of their pens are unibody, and can slide into a pocket or bag without worrying you'll lose a cap in the process. Besides, they really do look and feel good to use. Photo by J Wynia.
Uniball Pens (Jetstream, Signo, Onyx, Vision)
Uniball pens come in multiple shapes, sizes, and form factors, but one thing is certain: you reall love them. Whether it's the quick-drying Jetstream series, designed for speedy writers who don't want their ink to smudge, or the rich, smooth black ink of the Signo and Gel lines, or the utility but smooth, free-flowing rollerball feel of the Vision and Onyx lines, Uniball has a pen engineered for whatever writing style you prefer, that's comfortable enough to use for long periods, and at a price point that makes sure you can pick up more than a few and keep them around your home or office. You could write with different Uniball models for weeks and still fall in love with each new one you tried. Photo by Brett Jordan.
Lamy Pens (Safari, Al-Star, Vista)
Lamy's line of modern, stainless steel, and brushed aluminum pens earned high praise from those of you who don't want to break the bank on your writing instruments, but don't want to sacrifice good-looking style and comfort either. Whether it's the minimal, solid-color-and-clip design of the Safari line of fountains, gels, and rollerballs, or it's the more metallic tones of the Al-Stars, or even the transparant Vistas, many of you approved of Lamy's affordability and smooth, elegant writing. Even the shapely, designer Accent line earned nominations, and we have to agree?they all look good, and write better. Photo by vinyleraser.
Sharpie Pens
Sharpie's best known for their permanent markers, but their new pens offer the same quality non-toxic, smear-proof ink that?at least in this case?won't bleed through the paper as you use it. Sharpie's medium and fine point pens come with soft tips for smooth, consistent writing, and the best part is that they're available virtually anywhere. No refills or fancy designs on these, but those of you who nominated them love them to the point where at least one of you said that if you used one, you'd never vote for anything else. Sharpie's had a rough road with some of their pens, but we have to say: Sharpie's newer pens are great, and well worth a shot, especially considering the price point. Photo by redspotted.
That's it! Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to put them to an all out vote to determine the winner.
We have plenty of honorable mentions this week, mostly because the voting was so ridiculously close that there were multiple ties. First, one goes to The Fischer Space Pen, which many of you nominated for its clean, metallic designs that range from utilitarian to bullet-shaped, and the fact that they can write at all angles. The price doesn't hurt, ranging around $20-$50 for most models, and hey-they work in space!
Also worth mentioning are Bic Pens, including the Atlantis, Cristal, and Round Stic, all of which many of you praised for their affordability, multiple varieties, colors, styles, and writing thicknesses depending on your preference, their super-broad availability, and their smooth feel while writing.
FInally, we want to give a shoutout to Pentel Pens, including the Energel and R.S.V.P, which both offer great style, bang for your buck, and smooth, clean writing when used. Again, they fell just shy of the votes required to make the top five, which should show you how large the volume of nominees this week really was.
We got a ton of great nominees this week?way more than we could feature, even though we wanted to. Have something to say about one of the contenders? Want to make the case for your personal favorite, even if it wasn't included in the list? Remember, the top five are based on your most popular nominations from the call for contenders thread from earlier in the week. Make your case for your favorite?or alternative?in the discussions below.
The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

Researchers track the spread of human invasive non-Typhoidal Salmonella in sub-Saharan Africa
A new study out today (Sunday 30 September) reveals that the emergence and spread of a rapidly evolving invasive intestinal disease, that has a significant mortality rate (up to 45%) in infected people in sub-Saharan Africa, seems to have been potentiated by the HIV epidemic in Africa.
The team found that invasive non-Typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease is caused by a new form of the bacteria Salmonella Typhimurium that has spread from two different focal hubs in Southern and Central Africa beginning 52 and 35 years ago, respectively. They also found that one of the major contributing factors for the successful spread of iNTS was the acquisition of genes that afford resistance to several front line drugs used to treat blood-borne infection such as iNTS.
iNTS is a blood-borne infection that kills approximately one of four people in sub-Saharan Africa who catch it. Yet, in the rest of the world, NTS is a leading cause of acute inflammatory diarrhoea that is self-limiting and tends to be fatal in less than 1 per cent of people infected. The disease is more severe in sub-Saharan Africa than the rest of the world because of factors such as malnutrition, co-infection with malaria or HIV and potentially the novel genotype of the Salmonella bacteria.
"The immune system susceptibility provided by HIV, malaria and malnutrition at a young age, may provide a population in sub-Saharan Africa that is large enough for this detrimental pathogen to enter, adapt, circulate and thrive," says Chinyere Okoro, joint first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We used whole genome sequencing to define a novel lineage of Salmonella Typhimurium that is causing a previously unrecognised epidemic across the region. Its genetic makeup is evolving into a more typhoid like bacteria, able to efficiently spread around the human body"
From sequenced samples, the team created a phylogenetic or 'family tree', depicting the pathogen's evolution, dating when each sample first emerged and overlaying this with geographical information about where these samples came from. They found that this invasive disease comprises of two very closely related waves; the first wave originated from a possible south-eastern hub, about 52 years ago and the second originated about 35 years ago, possibly from the Congo Basin.
"The HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa is thought to have begun in a central region and underwent expansion eastwards, a strikingly similar dynamic to that observed for second iNTS wave," says Dr Robert Kingsley, joint first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Our findings suggest the current epidemic of iNTS and its transmission across sub-Saharan Africa may have been potentiated by an increase in the critical population of susceptible, immune-compromised people."
The team identified that the vast majority of samples from the second wave of iNTS contains a gene that makes them resistant to chloramphenicol, a frontline antibiotic in the treatment of Salmonella. This gene was not present in the samples from the first wave of iNTS. This observation suggests that iNTS acquired this gene early on in the evolution of the second wave, probably around the time of its spread from the Congo basin.
"Because it acquired resistance to chloramphenicol, this pathogen has much greater opportunity to survive and spread across the region," says Professor Gordon Dougan, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "This is the first time that the power of whole-genome sequencing has been used to track the spread of iNTS. Our research highlights the power this approach has to monitor the emergence and spread of dangerous pathogens both locally and globally over time."
"There has been some evidence that this disease can be passed from human to human. Now the race is on to discover how NTS is actually transmitted in sub-Saharan Africa so that effective intervention strategies can be implemented."

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Since the beginning of August, NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity, has been roaming all over the distant planet learning as much as it can about the Martian terrain. The mission control team back on Earth has also learned what it may be like on Mars by trying to live and work on a Martian day, which is about 40 minutes longer than an Earth day. This 'day' length causes havoc with the internal 24-hour body clock but researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) have developed and tested a fatigue management program which is successful at controlling this space-age jetlag.
The results of the study will be published electronically on September 28, 2012 and will be published in the October print issue of SLEEP.
Mission controllers investigating the Martian landscape are required to communicate with the rover on Martian time. This unusual schedule poses a great challenge as our internal body clock has evolved to expect a 24-hour light-dark, not a 24.65 h 'day', making it difficult to sleep, wake and work. "Our study, which was conducted during the Phoenix Mars Lander mission, investigated the effectiveness of a pilot program to educate the mission personnel on how to reset their body clocks more quickly and how to improve their sleep, alertness and performance," explained Steven W. Lockley, PhD, neuroscientist at BWH, and senior investigator on this study.
The research team studied 19 scientific and technical personnel supporting the Phoenix Lander mission for more than 11 weeks. The participants were assessed using a sleep/work diary, continuous wrist actigraphy, and regular performance tests. A subset of the study participants were also given portable blue-light light boxes to place at their workstations to help reset their internal body clocks and improve their performance. The researchers found that most of the participants were able to synchronize to a Martian day schedule.
"While adapting the human sleep-wake and performance cycle to a 24.65 hour day is a substantial challenge, our study has provided the foundation to develop comprehensive fatigue management programs for future missions, which may eventually include manned missions to Mars," explained Laura Barger, PhD, an associate physiologist at BWH and principal investigator of the study. "Such a program could decrease the risk of fatigue-related mistakes during these high profile and expensive missions."
Researchers suggest that these findings may also prove helpful to other groups that work on unusual 'day-lengths' such as submariners who have traditionally lived on an 18-hour day.

NORWICH, England (AP) -Luis Suarez scored a hat trick Saturday as Liverpool earned its first win of the Premier League season with a 5-2 drubbing at Norwich to ease some of the pressure on new manager Brendan Rodgers.
Suarez gave Liverpool a perfect start by sending a shot through the legs of goalkeeper John Ruddy in the second minute, and then added his second in the 38th. Midfielder Nuri Sahin made it 3-0 shortly after the break and Suarez then completed his hat trick in the 57th as Liverpool finally managed to convert its advantage in possession into goals.
Steve Morison pulled one back for the hosts four minutes later, but Steven Gerrard added the fifth for Liverpool in the 68th.
Grant Holt scored another consolation goal for Norwich in the 87th.
Liverpool had just two points from five games going into this weekend but climbed out of the relegation zone with the victory.

First, congratulations to the those of you who have landed a job recently. But guess what? Your job search isn't over. The economy is still unstable, in fact, it may never be stable. For you to feel like you have control over your career, you need to constantly keep your eyes open for your next great opportunity. You never want to get caught unprepared and unemployed again. By incorporating as many of these activities as possible into your already-busy schedule, you can ensure you have the visibility and strong connections to help you survive.
1. Join a professional association. Keep up with the trends and build your network at the same time by joining a professional association. Your new employer may even offer to pay for your membership, if they see the return on their investment. Don't assume, ask. You will never know unless you do. Be sure your request includes how your company will benefit, such as: awareness of your company in the community and possibly good public relations, acquiring new ideas and information, potential new partnerships, access to current resources and trends, and more.
2. Sign up for a class or workshop. Did you ever feel like your skills weren't quite up-to-date while you were job searching? Were their certifications you were missing or skills you lacked? Don't let that happen again. Invest in your professional development. You can either pay for it yourself or ask your company to reimburse you. Again, if you are asking for sponsorship or reimbursement, you will have to put your request in terms that show the benefits to your company. And remember to build your network while you are attending class.
3. Stay in touch. While you were active in your job search, you undoubtedly met many new people. Look for ways to keep in touch with these people and do this regularly. You can invite them to coffee to catch up, shoot them an email, invite them to an event, forward them an interesting article or book review, or congratulate them on their success or the success of their company. Does it take time? Absolutely. But keeping your network alive is crucial in developing career insurance.
Hopefully you're using LinkedIn and will continue to do so. LinkedIn makes it easier for your to see status updates and news about your network. Remember, not everyone uses the site regularly or may not be a primary source for their communication. Don't forget to use regular email and the telephone.
More: How Successful People Network
4. Community involvement. With the pressure to find a job gone, you now have time to focus on giving back to your community, either locally or globally. Become involved as a volunteer or perhaps a board member. Be sure the organization is one which you are proud to support, makes you feel good, and one you don't mind giving up your free time to help. Don't forget about colleges or universities, they need your help too. Host an alumni event, offer to mentor new graduates, or help support an event.
5. Seek out mentors. Identify people inside and outside of your company who can serve as formal or informal mentors. Chose people who you can turn to for advice or whom you can learn from. Mentors are not just for those new to the workplace, even seasoned professionals can benefit from learning something new and getting fresh perspectives. If this is something you decide to pursue, respect the time your mentor carves out for you and show your appreciation.
6. Monitor job postings. The easiest way to monitor job postings is to create alerts on various job boards. Before you invest time applying for a job, contact someone you know inside the company and ask for an update on the job's status. Find out the inside scoop on why the job is available and be sure it is an opportunity worth your time to apply for.
7. Build your personal reputation. Update your LinkedIn profile and other social network profiles with your new information. Begin tracking your accomplishments from day one in your new job and look for ways you can highlight these accomplishments among your networks. When you receive an email from a manager, client, or colleague thanking you for a job well-done, definitely save the recommendation in a personal file which you keep at home. You may also consider asking for a recommendation on LinkedIn as well. Other ways to build your reputation outside of your current organization might include:
Contributing to an industry newsletter.
Giving presentations or sitting on a panel of experts.
Attending professional conferences and/or trade shows.
Go above and beyond what is expected of you every day. Get your name out there. You want to create a well-respected and well-known reputation and have opportunities come to you.
There is no greater ego-boost than an unexpected job offer. Remember, it is unlikely your next job will last forever, so taking some of these steps will help you hit the ground running faster, when, not if, there is a next time.

Ms Tillman survived the horrors by jumping from a window and hiding until firefighters arrived to put out a fire started by the rapist (and previous murderer) to cover his tracks. This is a horrible story and I wont go into anymore of the details, I just wanted to lay the groundwork for what also outraged me about the story. This jumped out at me:
Her brother Jacob, who is hoping to raise $65,000 for reconstructive jaw surgery for his sister, has spoken of her inspiring positivity in the face of these appalling injuries.
.....
Her insurance only pays for a procedure that would wire her jaw shut - a move which would reverse her speech therapy by stopping her from practicing words regularly, her brother said.
What kind of (insert curse word here) insurance company will only provide a procedure that inhibits recovery? This is a woman who had to learn to walk, talk and live again. ?$65,000 dollars. The price of lunch with Mitt Romney, yet her brother is forced to fundraising for help getting his sister help?
And what would have happened if she did not have Insurance? Take her to the Emergency Room?
?This is so outrageous that even the DailyMail commentors have dropped their usual RedStateHate-Mode:
What a remarkable woman. She is no victim, because she refuses to be one. What courage, will and intelligence to know she still has many wonderful years ahead. I previously posted many comments about Americans are always playing the victim card. Many people let a traumatic experience ruin their lives by dwelling on the past, feeling sorry because some relative or pet died many years ago, any excuse to be on the dole and expect sympathy. If you cannot make it in this wonderful country of endless opportunities, you cannot make it anywhere. Most of my comments receive red arrows; maybe the truth hurts, America is a land of mostly whiners and losers. It's so refreshing to know some one like Lydia Tillman. Best of luck. I know she will make it. I wish some of my tax dollars will go to help with tbe medical expenses. I wouldn't mind.
Which insurance company is failing to provide this woman with care? What is the name of the decision maker at this company which has cut her off? The heralded Obamacare plan is for people to have insurance, on their dime, and this lady had insurance! Why should the family have to go begging for donations for her care when she had insurance? A crime victim who is also a responsible person carries insurance yet when it is time to cover the care she's left out in the cold? What the hell? In whose cartoon is this fair? The gov't regulates insurance companies in the US. This company should be named and shamed. It is infuriating that a gov't regulated insurance company can accept premiums paid in good faith, yet when it is time to cover cost of care, the lady is left out in the cold.&^%$#%&*((&^%%% (<=curse words) - Dacy , Kansas City
The family shouldnt have to be sorting out insurance, trying to raise money for the better treatment. This woman has suffered enough, and what if she hadnt had insurance? Hope the monster who did this never gets out of jail.I think we really are getting so used to hearing these horror stories because nothing ever gets done, no harsher prison sentances, no push for affordable healthcare, it just goes on and on. - lisa , WI,

Reading History is the ideal remedy against discouragement and dissatisfaction. During difficult periods, man can gain perspective by learning how his ancestors turned problems into opportunities. Past centuries have repeatedly shown how individuals with limited resources can face life's challenges and overcome extraordinary obstacles. ? Dealing with failure in life
Hesiod, an Ancient Greek poet, recounted in the year 770 B.C. that "the world did not welcome me when I was born and each season brought nothing but problems and difficulties." The reason for such lamentations was that a court decision in favour of his brother, Perses, had deprived Hesiod of his inheritance at an early age, forcing him to earn his subsistence by working in other people's fields.
As a result of adversity, Hesiod soon acquired first-hand experience in all kind of farm labours and gained expertise in breeding goats and sheep. "Watching the sheep kindled my ambition," he recorded. "I realized that, unlike sheep, I had the capacity to take control of my future."
During the winter, Hesiod witnessed how the cold temperature in the mountains of northern Greece often culled herds by half. Later on, he would write that the destiny of animals, unlike that of human beings, is fully dependent on the weather. The young shepherd spent a long time preparing himself in the solitude of the mountains until, one spring, he walked to Chalces, a nearby village, and enrolled in the annual poetry contest.
Making your personal development plan
In Ancient Greece, winning a poetry contest was a ticket to fame and opened the door to a political career. That year, competition was particularly fierce since Homer, the most famous poet of the time, had come to Chalces to take part in the contest.
On the eve of the competition, Perses asked his brother to which God he would be devoting his poem, as it was customary to do on such occasions. Hesiod smiled and shook his head. "My poem is not about Gods, it's about sheep." Perses stared at his brother incredulously, but did not make any comment.
At the beginning of the contest, the jury separated the participants in two groups, one for the morning session and the other for the afternoon. After that, the winners from both groups would face each other in the evening finale.
Homer achieved an easy victory in the morning competition, but the jury deliberated long before picking the afternoon winner. Who was this youngster Hesiod? It was the first time that anyone had ever heard a poem about sheep in the mountain.
Using critical thinking skills
Amiphidamas, who was the mayor of Chalces and the president of the jury said that he liked Hesiod's poem. "That shepherd has interesting ideas," he told the other judges of the contest. In a way, Amiphidamas' view was not surprising, since he owned the largest herd of the village.
In the evening, torches were lighted to illuminate the theatre. Peasants from surrounding villages had come to Chalces to see the poetry finale, which featured Homer against an unknown shepherd called Hesiod. The result of the contest was predictable and Perses bet heavily against his brother.
Homer recited a poem recounting the Trojan war and his performance galvanized the young. His strong voice and impeccable speech brought the audience memories of long-forgotten Gods and glories. When he finished his declamation, the jury nodded satisfied. Nobody doubted that Homer would come out winner.
How to find happiness through personal growth
Then the young shepherd Hesiod came to stand before the public. "How hard life is," he started, "and how recurrent our miseries." Puzzled by the unusual beginning, the audience held their breath to be able to hear better. What was this poem all about?
It was the story of a farmer who lost half of his herd every winter due to extreme cold. In his poem, Hesiod noted the scarcity of sheep in the winter, their over-abundance in the summer, and how sheep prices oscillated with the change of seasons.
"I asked the oracle for an answer," recited Hesiod, "but he told me to look for it myself." At that point, part of the audience murmured their disapproval. Undaunted, the young poet questioned his public. "What to do in face of winter scarcity? Should man suffer passively the caprice of the Gods?"
Hesiod's poem was called "Work and Days." His conclusion was unmistakable. A wise man should buy sheep in the summer at a low price and wait for the winter's cold weather to bring back high prices and the opportunity of a profitable sale.
When Hesiod finished his performance, the audience remained silent. Half of the jury members were in favour of Homer, but Amiphidamas' preference allowed the young shepherd to carry the day. Hesiod's rhyme had been awkward and his presence on stage unexciting, but the judges had found his poem "highly instructive for ourselves and future generations."
