AN APPLE a day can help keep the blues away.

Peak Women's Fitness personal trainer Brett Matthews is taking a stance against depression by helping those sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Last night he held a free seminar at Active Living in Maroochydore with 25 participants. He will host another seminar tonight.

The seminars tie in with Mental Health Week which began on Sunday and will end this Sunday.

Mr Matthews said his motivation came from a World Health Organisation prediction that by 2020 depression would become the second leading cause of disease worldwide.

He said the battle against depression began in the kitchen.

"Rather than trying to change whole heap of things we want people to change a few little things at a time," he said.

"Try a walk in the morning, eating vegetables with every meal. Things like that can make a huge difference. Don't just jump in and do too many things at once."

Mr Matthews' seminar concentrated on five areas: nutrition, supplementation, sleep, stress reduction and exercise.

"By eating right, people can have a lot more happiness and a lot more energy."

Mr Matthews said some of his clients were confused about how to eat well.

"I think a lot of people are confused. There's a lot of information and it's hard to find the right stuff," he said.

Anyone interested in registering for tonight's free, one-hour seminar should go to sunshinecoasttrainer. com. au/register.
